India and Sri Lanka Enhance Cooperation

On 6th April 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded a productive visit to Sri Lanka, marked by the signing of seven MoUs and the launch of key development and strategic projects across sectors like energy, railways, defence, and health.

Key Points

  • Infrastructure Boost: PM Modi inaugurated the upgraded Maho-Omanthai railway line and launched the construction of a signalling system for Maho-Anuradhapura railway line.
  • Cultural Support: India will grant aid for the restoration and development of Thirukoneswaram Temple, Seetha Eliya Temple, and Anuradhapura’s Sacred City Complex.
  • Skill Development: A capacity building program will train 700 Sri Lankans annually in India across various sectors.
  • Debt Restructuring & Diplomacy: India and Sri Lanka signed Bilateral Amendatory Agreements on debt restructuring and highlighted deepening strategic cooperation.
