ISRO to End 2024 with SpaDeX Mission Launch

  • 25 Dec 2024

On 30th December 2024, ISRO will launch the SpaDeX mission from Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota, using the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle PSLV-C60 to deploy two 220 kg satellites into a 470 km circular orbit.

Key Points

  • Demonstration of Space Docking Technology: The SpaDeX mission features two satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), designed to demonstrate in-space docking, including alignment, distance reduction, docking, power transfer, and final separation.
  • Cost-Effective Space Technology: The mission serves as a cost-efficient demonstrator for India’s advanced space ambitions, including manned Moon missions, sample return missions, and the establishment of Bharatiya Antariksh Station.
  • Building Relative Distance in Orbit: The satellites will separate to achieve a relative distance of 10–20 km before initiating docking operations, with the PSLV providing a small relative velocity for manoeuvring.
  • India’s Milestone in Space Docking: Success in this mission will position India as the fourth country globally (after the US, Russia and China) to possess in-space docking technology, enhancing its space exploration capabilities.
  • Extended Satellite Operations: Post-separation, payloads on both satellites will continue to operate for two years, ensuring long-term data collection and research.
