Madhav Gadgil Honored as UNEP ‘Champion of the Earth’

In December, 2024, veteran ecologist Madhav Gadgil was named a 2024 ‘Champion of the Earth’ by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

- UNEP highlighted his influence on public opinion and policy, particularly for his work in the ecologically sensitive Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot.
- Gadgil’s seminal 2011 report, advocating for the protection of the Western Ghats, remains a crucial document in addressing industrial and climate challenges in the region.
- The award celebrates Gadgil’s scientific career spanning six decades, during which he has championed marginalized communities and community-driven conservation efforts.
- UNEP also honored five other laureates, including Brazil’s Sonia Guajajara for policy leadership and Amy Bowers Cordalis of the US for indigenous rights advocacy.
