On 12th November 2024, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) released the World Intellectual Property Indicators (WIPI) 2024, showcasing significant global trends in IP filings, with India marking impressive progress across key IP categories.

Key Points

  • Top 10 Global Ranking: India ranks among the top 10 countries globally for patents, trademarks, and industrial designs, establishing itself as a leader in intellectual property (IP) growth.
  • Fastest Growth in Patents: In 2023, India recorded a 15.7% rise in patent applications, the highest growth rate among the top 20 countries, reaching 64,480 applications and ranking sixth worldwide. Resident filings accounted for over half (55.2%), a milestone for India’s IP landscape.
  • Industrial Design Growth: Industrial design applications surged by 36.4%, with key contributions from sectors like Textiles and Accessories, Tools and Machines, and Health and Cosmetics, reflecting India's manufacturing and creative industry expansion.
  • Increase in Trademark Filings: India ranked fourth globally in trademark filings with a 6.1% increase in 2023. Nearly 90% of filings were by residents, primarily in Health, Agriculture, and Clothing sectors.
  • Patent-to-GDP Ratio: The patent-to-GDP ratio has risen from 144 to 381 in the past decade, signalling India’s IP activity aligning closely with its economic growth.
