On 9th November 2024, India gifted two Fast Interceptor Craft (FIC) to Mozambique, transported via INS Gharial, to enhance Mozambique's capacity in maritime security.

Key Points

  • Technical Specifications and Role: The FICs, designed for rapid response, reach speeds of up to 45 knots with a 200-nautical-mile range at 12 knots, and are fitted with machine guns and bulletproof cabins.
  • These vessels are intended to support Mozambique in tackling maritime terrorism and insurgency, especially in the troubled Cabo Delgado region.
  • India’s Commitment to IOR Security and HADR: Since 2019, India has provided Mozambique with multiple vessels and, during natural disasters and crises, has extended extensive humanitarian aid, such as delivering over a million COVID-19 vaccine doses and responding to Cyclone Idai in 2019.
  • India has also trained Mozambique's maritime security forces in areas like anti-piracy, human trafficking, and counterterrorism.
  • Expanded Defence Relations: In November 2023, India gifted Mozambique an Infantry weapons training simulator, enhancing Mozambique's defence training.
  • Indian warships regularly visit Mozambique for training and joint exercises, reinforcing India’s commitment to a secure and stable Indian Ocean Region (IOR).
