WHO Declares Egypt Malaria-Free

  • 21 Oct 2024

On 20th October, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that Egypt has been certified malaria-free, ending the presence of the disease that dates back to ancient times.

  • Egypt achieved the certification by proving that the indigenous transmission of malaria by Anopheles mosquitoes has been halted for at least three consecutive years.
  • The WHO certification requires countries to demonstrate beyond doubt that local malaria transmission has been interrupted for an extended period.
  • Egypt joins a global group of 44 countries and one territory that have achieved malaria-free status, according to WHO.
  • This achievement highlights Egypt’s commitment to public health, disease prevention, and consistent efforts in eradicating the deadly disease.
  • Malaria, once widespread in Egypt, has been eradicated due to improved health systems, mosquito control measures, and public health campaigns.
