Keki N. Daruwalla

On 26th September 2024, celebrated poet and former IPS officer Keki N. Daruwalla passed away in a Delhi hospital after a prolonged illness and pneumonia.

  • The poet passed away due to pneumonia-related complications.
  • Daruwalla, known for both his poetry and short stories, leaves behind two daughters, Anaheita and Rookvain, along with their families.
  • Born in Lahore in 1937, Daruwalla later studied at Government College in Ludhiana before joining the Indian Police Services in 1958.
  • He had an illustrious career, rising to become a special assistant on international affairs to former Prime Minister Charan Singh and serving in the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), where he was promoted to secretary.
  • Despite his successful career in law enforcement, Daruwalla gained prominence for his literary works, with his first poetry collection, Under Orion, published in 1970.
  • Daruwalla received the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1984, which he returned in 2015 as a protest against the institution's silence on violence against writers.
