On 27th September 2024, the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change announced that it has successfully planted over 80 crore seedlings across India as part of the Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam campaign.
- The ambitious target of planting 80 crore saplings was achieved on September 25, five days ahead of the planned deadline.
- The campaign, launched on June 5, World Environment Day, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, focuses on afforestation efforts across the nation.
- Uttar Pradesh contributed significantly, leading the campaign by planting approximately 26 crore saplings.
- The Ministry credited the success to collaborative efforts involving government agencies, local communities, and stakeholders from across the country.
- The drive was launched by Prime Minister Modi in New Delhi, where he symbolically planted a Peepal sapling.
- The campaign has contributed significantly to India’s afforestation efforts, with large-scale participation from various states.
- This initiative also emphasizes the importance of tree plantation in combating climate change and preserving biodiversity.
