Government Increases Minimum Wages to ₹1,035 per Day

On 27th September 2024, the Union government announced a hike in minimum wages, with rates reaching up to Rs. 1,035 per day, effective from October 1, 2024, following the revision of the Variable Dearness Allowance (VDA).

Wage Rates by Skill Level: For unskilled workers in area 'A,' including those in construction, sweeping, and loading, the revised minimum wage is set at Rs. 783 per day, translating to Rs. 20,358 per month.
Semi-Skilled Workers: Semi-skilled workers will now receive Rs. 868 per day, amounting to Rs. 22,568 per month, reflecting the government's commitment to fair compensation across skill categories.
Skilled Workers and Watch & Ward: For skilled, clerical, and watch & ward without arms, the daily minimum wage has been set at Rs. 954, which corresponds to Rs. 24,804 per month.
Highly Skilled and Armed Security: Highly skilled workers, along with watch & ward personnel with arms, will now earn Rs. 1,035 per day, equating to Rs. 26,910 per month.
Effective Date and Previous Revision: The wage hike, coming into effect on October 1, 2024, marks the second revision this year, following an earlier update in April.
Categorization of Wage Rates: Minimum wage rates are divided based on workers' skill levels (unskilled, semi-skilled, skilled, and highly skilled) and geographic areas classified as A, B, and C.
