Light Weight Bullet Proof Jackets

  • 26 Sep 2024

In September 2024, the Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO), in collaboration with researchers from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, successfully developed a new generation of Light Weight Bullet Proof Jackets named ABHED (Advanced Ballistics for High Energy Defeat).

Key Points

  • Material Composition: The jackets are made from advanced polymers and indigenous boron carbide ceramic materials, ensuring high levels of protection while remaining lightweight.
  • Design and Testing: The design was based on thorough characterization of various materials under high strain rates, complemented by extensive modeling and simulation in collaboration with DRDO.
  • Protection and Weight: ABHED jackets provide protection against the highest threat levels while being lighter than the maximum weight limits set by the General Staff Qualitative Requirement of the Indian Army.
  • They weigh 8.2 kg and 9.5 kg for different BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) levels and feature a modular design with front and rear armor for 360-degree protection.
  • Industry Engagement: Based on a selection-criteria matrix, several Indian industries have been shortlisted for Transfer of Technology and support in production. The Centre is prepared to transfer this cutting-edge technology to three selected industries.
