Central Railway Signs MoU for Plastic Waste Management

In September 2024, the Central Railway partnered with Shakti Plastic Industries to implement plastic waste management solutions at key stations, including the iconic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), to promote sustainable practices.

• The agreement focuses on waste reduction and recycling at stations in Mumbai, particularly at CSMT, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Wadibunder depot.
• This partnership is part of a broader initiative aligned with national and regional policies aimed at improving waste management and environmental sustainability.
• The MoU outlines a pilot project to enhance waste collection, segregation, and recycling processes at these key railway stations and depots.
• Central Railway will provide space and the necessary permissions to Shakti Plastic for carrying out recycling operations and waste management activities at the designated sites.
• Shakti Plastic will contribute by supplying infrastructure items like benches and dustbins, made from recycled plastic, to be used at CSMT.
• This initiative is expected to reduce the strain on Urban Local Bodies by improving waste management efficiency at stations, easing disposal burdens.
• The project is also a step towards Central Railway's goal of achieving 'Net Zero Station' status, a key environmental target set by the Government of India.
