Anura Kumara Dissanayake Sworn in as Sri Lankan President

On 22nd September, 2024, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, leader of the National People’s Power (NPP), was sworn in as Sri Lanka’s ninth president, raising hopes for economic recovery and anti-corruption reforms.

Dissanayake, 56, took the oath of office at the Presidential Secretariat, administered by Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya.
He succeeds former President Ranil Wickremesinghe after securing victory in the recent presidential election.
Dissanayake leads the Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) party’s broader front, National People’s Power (NPP).
Dissanayake’s campaign focused on economic revival, pledging to steer Sri Lanka out of its financial crisis.
