Supermoon Blue Moon Event

  • 17 Aug 2024

On 19th August, 2024, a Supermoon Blue Moon will light up the sky, marking the first of four consecutive supermoons this year.

  • A supermoon happens when the moon is within 90 percent of its closest approach to Earth, appearing about 30 percent brighter and 14 percent larger than usual.
  • The term "supermoon" was first coined by astronomer Richard Nolle in 1979 to describe these particularly bright and large full moons.
  • The Blue Moon on 19th August is a seasonal blue moon, which is the third full moon in a season with four full moons, not related to any blue coloration.
  • Optimal viewing conditions include a clear horizon and minimal light pollution; using binoculars or a telescope can enhance the experience.
  • For the best photographs, use a camera with a zoom lens and a tripod to stabilize shots, and take advantage of the 'moon illusion' effect when the moon is near the horizon.
