UK Foreign Secretary Official Visit to India

On July 24th, 2024, Foreign Secretary of the UK David Lammy paid an official visit to India. It was his first official visit to India in his capacity as UK Foreign Secretary. During the visit, UK Foreign Secretary called on Prime Minister and also met with Shri Ajit Doval, National Security Adviser.

Key Points

  • India's External Affairs Minister and the UK Foreign Secretary reviewed the Roadmap 2030, initially agreed upon during the India-UK Virtual Summit 2021.
  • They committed to finalizing details promptly to enhance bilateral cooperation in trade, investment, defence, security, migration, mobility, IT/AI/Tech, science and technology, innovation, and green energy.
  • Both sides welcomed the launch of the UK–India Technology Security Initiative (TSI), led by their National Security Advisors, to boost collaboration in critical and emerging technologies (CET) such as Telecom, Critical Minerals, Semiconductors, Artificial Intelligence, Quantum, Biotech, and Advanced Materials.
  • A bilateral mechanism will be established, led by India's Ministry of External Affairs and the UK Government, to promote CET trade and collaboration, addressing licensing and regulatory issues.
  • They acknowledged the progress in India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations and anticipated its early conclusion. Defence and security cooperation will be deepened, especially in the Indo-Pacific, to counter non-state threats.
  • The ministers discussed enhancing collaboration on climate and the green economy, and strengthening people-to-people ties through the Migration and Mobility Partnership.
  • Regional and global issues of mutual interest, including the Russia-Ukraine conflict, West Asia, the Red Sea, the Commonwealth, and the UN Security Council, were also discussed.
