BRICS Foreign Ministers Meet

India’s Dammu Ravi, Secretary (Economic Relations) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), led the Indian delegation to participate in the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting, which commenced on June 10th, 2024, in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia.

Key Points

  • Membership: This is the first meeting of foreign ministers since the expansion of BRICS in 2023. The 10 full members of the association include Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, with new members Egypt, Iran, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Ethiopia joining the grouping in 2023.
  • Chairmanship: Russia assumed the chairmanship of BRICS on 1st January 2024.
  • Focus: All sides agreed on specific norms, such as multilateralism, upholding of international law, comprehensive reform of the United Nations, United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), commitment to a successful COP29, BRICS coordination on global health, condemning unilateral and discriminatory protectionist measures, open and transparent WTO, reforms in global financial architecture and more.
