- 11 Jan 2024
On 8th January,2024, the Armament Research and Development Establishment (ARDE) in collaboration with a Hyderabad-based private firm unveiled the indigenous assault rifle named 'Ugram' (ferocious), marking a significant milestone as the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) lab joined forces with the private industry for the first time to manufacture a 7.62 x 51 mm calibre rifle.
Key Points
- Strategic Collaboration: This joint venture between the ARDE and the private firm signifies a landmark collaboration in the manufacturing of an assault rifle, representing a new era of partnership between government research organizations and private industry.
- Operational Requirements: The 'Ugram' rifle is designed and developed to meet the operational needs of the Indian armed forces, paramilitary forces, and state police forces.
- Weighing less than four kg and boasting a firing range of 500 meters, the weapon aims to address the diverse requirements of security forces.
- Importance in Current Security Scenario: With a shortfall in assault rifles within the forces, the 'Ugram' rifle gains prominence, especially amid challenges in importing AK-203 rifles due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
- Development cum Production Partner (DCPP): The project adopted the concept of Development cum Production Partner, involving the private firm in the collaborative development process.
- The ARDE will conduct internal trials before initiating user trials to ensure the weapon meets specified requirements.
- Swift Development: The collaboration showcases the efficiency and capabilities of both parties in delivering a high-quality product within a short timeframe.
- Barrel Manufacturing Facility: The ARDE has established a dedicated barrel manufacturing facility on its campus with an investment of Rs 60 crore.
- Equipped with machines imported from Austria, this facility aims to provide cost-effective barrel manufacturing support to private industries involved in weapon production.
- Demand for Cost-Effective Barrels: Private industries, licensed to develop weapons, often face challenges in manufacturing barrels due to the lack of technology and facilities.
- The ARDE's initiative addresses this gap, providing expertise and support to meet the growing demand for cost-effective barrels in the industry.
