National Monitoring Framework On SDGs

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), otherwise known as Global Goals, was a landmark achievement that calls for a universal action to end poverty, protect the planet as well as ensure all people enjoy peace and prosperity. These 17 goals were built on the successes of the Millennium Development Goals and needs to be achieved by 2030.

To align India’s national goals with SDGs a High Level Steering Committee was constituted. The committee is to be chaired by Chief Statistician of India with the aim to periodically review and refine the National Indicator Framework (NIF), thereby ensuring National Programmes are in alignment with Sustainable Development Goals

Targets

  • Mainstream SDGs into on-going national policies, programmes and strategic action plans to address the developmental challenges.
  • Statistical indicators given by NIF will act as a feedback mechanism and form the backbone of monitoring of SDGs at national and state level.
  • Bring out national reports on implementation of SDGs while identifying challenges and giving recommendations for follow up at the national level.
  • Data source Ministries/Departments will be responsible for providing regular information to MoSPI on these indicators at required intervals and disaggregation for national and sub-national reporting of SDGs.
  • Use of Big Data and advanced IT tools for close and effective monitoring of SDGs.

Impact and Significance

  • Free flow of data across Ministries/Departments regarding SDGs improves transparency and demands accountability from public officials
  • Integrates economic, social and environmental dimensions of development into national policies
  • Due to outcome based monitoring NIF can ensure principles of social justice and inclusion as well as addressing inequalities.
  • Help foster equitable social development, eradicate poverty, promote prosperity as well as raise basic standard of living in a changing world.
